The invisible fraction – Implicit Bias Training

Women are under-represented in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). This under-representation increases from A levels to professor level and has been dubbed the “leaky pipeline” and occurs both in and outside of academia. Using the evolutionary analogy of the “invisible fraction” in which individuals are selectively removed from the population, I’ll describe where the pipeline leaks (where selection is strongest on females), discuss some reasons for the leaks (what factors may explain selection), and why both females and males should care about solving the leak. The ultimate goal is to provide some ideas for potential solutions, particularly at the academic level.

The lecture will be delivered by Dr Rhonda Snook, Animal and Plant Sciences, The University of Sheffield.

Date: Thursday, 2 Feb  2017
Time: 10 – 12 pm
Location: The Diamond Building. Lecture Theatre 3, University of Sheffield

We strongly encourage your attendance. This is a good opportunity to build on your training and could be a valuable addition to your ‘Career and communication portfolio’. If you would like to attend but can not travel to the venue, we are offering a Live Stream of the lecture via a link, which will be sent to all ACCE students and will be accessible 15 minutes before the event for those in remote places. The link does not require any specific software; it works from a website straight on once you click on it. You will only need a computer, internet connection and a browser. You will be able to passively listen to the live lecture, but will not be able to ask questions.
